13) Are capillary slabs too wet for winter crop?
No, because the water content of a slab is determined by the volume of water supplied to the slab in comparison with the volume lost by evaporation. Refraining from trickle irrigation and allowing the plant to lose a great deal of water by evaporation (hot pipes) will automatically cause the slab to dry out. In other words, the slab is steerable.
In principle, growers endeavour to maintain a lower water content in the winter. This can be achieved by allowing the crop to lose a sufficient amount of water through evaporation (pipes at the minimum temperature, rapid airing) and lengthening the intervals between the trickle-irrigation periods.
