11) Why is it important to have a water buffer in the cultivation system?
In the first instance, the water buffer needs to be able to bridge a temporary breakdown of the feed unit. A substrate with a lower capillarity is more susceptible to drying out. In addition, the fluctuations in EC, pH and temperature will be less extreme in a capillary substrate with a water buffer.
The previous question already covered the savings in water and fertiliser – savings which are, of course, also important if you plan to recirculate the water. A water buffer greatly reduces the volume of water that you need to disinfect, thereby decreasing the disinfection costs per m².
